The Chimes A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In is a short novel by Charles Dickens and is the second book in his series of Christmas books. The Chimes is a story of about self-respect and the consequences of their choices. It may not be as popular as the first book, A Christmas Carol; it probably packs more of an emotional punch than either story. It is a tale that will--as the best of Dickensian melodrama does--grip you and wring your heart. One really gets the sense of what reading Dickens must have felt like to his contemporaries.

The book includes original illustrations by Daniel Maclise, Richard Doyle,
John Leech and Clarkson Stanfield, an active/navigable table of contents, and a Free audiobook link for download (which can be downloaded using a PC/Mac) at the end of the book.

Dickensian character, that is. Trotty Veck is a quintessential Dickensian character. The dreams or visions that Dickens describes confused me at times, but my reading may have been too disjointed. I suggest reading this tale all at once, in front of a New Year's Eve fireplace, without stopping.
Emotional and full of lessons, Dickens instructs the reader with the words and actions of his characters. Trotty Veck (Toby) is lovable and friendly, strong, weak, and most of all, humble. He's a little bit of the good and naïveté in all of us. He reminds me of Pickwick in his gentleness and Sam Weller in his humorous philosophy. Even though he sees ghosts, there is no humbug in him. Yet he manages to display the post-conversion gratefulness and hilarity of Ebenezer in 'A Christmas Carol'.

I love Dicken's A Christmas Carol and read and reread that, have even used portions for inspirational talks, so I wanted to check this out. Unfortunately I've found difficult to follow the mental scenes and got bogged down and stopped. I also found the print format off putting. I appreciated the reviews that give plot summaries, and will give it another try.
There were a lot of words and phrases I didn't quite understand, but I understood the point and lesson. This book was good and it makes a good companion book with A Christmas Carol. I enjoyed it.
This Christmas novella (actually it is a New Year's story) is not as good as Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," but it is a solid book with a moral and a supernatural element (in this case goblins).

Parts of the story are quite bleak and there is very little humor.

But if you like Dickens' other works, you will probably like this one, too.
Every bit as charming as A Christmas Carol, this New Year's Eve tale reflects on the worth of people from all walks of life and the virtue of valuing even the seemingly least significant of them. Enjoy! And a very happy New Year to you and your loved ones.
I’ve just started reading the other 4 Christmas books by Dickens and I must say this one, centered on New Year’s Eve not Christmas, was different and I enjoyed it tremendously. It made me cry and it made me smile.
Not Dickens' best, but still rather good. His writing here has a certain restless, almost hyper, quality. The action takes place over New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Dickens' satiric puncturing of the self-proclaimed 'friends of the poor' is a delight and wouldn't need much changing to bring it up to date for the 21st century. It all ends happily with, appropriately, a wedding.
I decided to read Dickens' Christmas pentalogy. I'd read A Christmas Carol. This story is set on New Year's Eve. It's similar to A Christmas Carol (and to two of the other three stories) in that it involves a revelation that comes in a dream. In this case, it has to do with Trotty the porter's doubts about his daughter's future. He's been listening to politicians hold forth on the worthlessness of the lower classes and he's starting to wonder whether they might be right.
